Root Canals and the whole tooth

There is no need to be worried if your dentist has prescribed a root canal to treat a damaged or a diseased tooth. Millions of teeth all over the world are saved due to this common procedure. The tooth fairy may be feeling deprived but we assure you that your teeth will thank you for keeping them around a little bit longer!

What is a Root Canal?

When a tooth becomes damaged due to disease or decay, sometimes the best option is in fact to clean out the dieseased or decayed pulp and reshape the tooth. The pulp is the soft tissue inside your tooth which houses nerves, blood vessels and connective tissues which help grow the root of your tooth during its development. A fully developed tooth can continue to grow and be nourished by the tissues surrounding it. Once the dentist is able to remove the cause of the disease, the tooth is reshaped and the space is filled with a filling, just like a regular filling from say a cavity. The procedure is painless and extremely effective and may even be completed within one to two treatment sessions. This of course is all dependant of your tooths severity and personal circumstances. Your trusted Strathcona Dental Works dental team here in Calgary, Alberta will be able to assess accordingly and get you started on the right path!

What are the benefits of a Root Canal?

Saving your tooth may have many benefits which can include:

  1. Normal biting force and sensation
  2. Efficient chewing
  3. Natural appereance
  4. Protection of other teeth from wear and tear
  5. Protection of your natural joint function (Tempro-Mandibular Joint, TMJ for short)

Post Root Canal Options

There may be times after your root canal that the tooth may become brittle and prone to fractures. At this time, your dentist may recommend reinforcing the tooth with a post or a crown. This will ensure longevity of your tooth and return to full function.

Still have questions? We would love to hear from you should you have any questions or concerns about your root canal or any other treatments you may require. Our dedicated staff at Strathcona Dental Works in Calgary,Alberta will ensure you receive the most comfortable experience while at our clinic. Even the tooth fairy would agree!
